Can One Book or One Author Change Culture?
They certainly can.
For instance, Plato’s Republic addresses the justice in man, politics and the role of the philosopher. In a negative sense Karl Marx and Friedrich Engel’s Communist Manifesto addressing class struggles and anti-capitalism are both indicative of that. And in a positive sense, Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man which supports and encourages Americans to fight for independence from Great Britain.
Then there is William Shakespeare and his many plays. They are still enjoyed today and also provides a template for many movies and TV programs.
Can you and I really make a difference?
We certainly can! We may never write a world changer novel or non-fiction blockbuster, but we can write a book or any other form of print that can radically change the life and culture for one person! You could write a book about addiction which could impact a person to be sober.
On this site I will give you several ideas that could be the priming of your writing career.
My LEARNING Style Affects My WRITING Style
Learning Can Be Hard…Until…
I felt safe there. Safe and free enough to let my mind wander away from school expectations and into the world of exciting possibilities.
My mind would imagine what it would be like to be Daniel Boone or wonder if clouds made noise when they bumped into each other.
Most importantly I discovered the courage to think my own thoughts then compare them to what I had read in books or heard others express.
The other major effect on my learning style was having parents who encouraged, okay, “forced” me to give reasons supporting my ideas and opinions. Something as simple as, “I think the fish will be really biting today.” elicited a “Why do you think the fish will be biting today?” from either parent.
My Writing is a Reflection of the way I Learned
I absolutely love to read. The scope of my reading is large, even including the theses of principals I’ve worked for or some of my best friends.
Whew! I could neve do the academia style of writing! Therefore, I write in a simple to understand style of writing that also allows the reader the necessity of allowing their creativity or imagination to expand on the topic. In other words, I write in the way I learned. I like to write about things that are practical, life changing…maybe even not quite knowing where the story ends.
The FOCUS of my writing is Simple
In order to think beyond normal we must comprehend four things.
- Understand the Mind Matters Most
- Have Courage to Achieve Spontaneous Intentionality
- Know That Learning Must Meet Life
- Believe There is truth and Absolute Truth
Let me explain each of these points briefly. If you want to read a more thorough discussion of each read the About section of this site.
Something as simple as reaching for a cup of coffee where it is on the desk, grappling with understanding a math problem, or even listening to a favorite song is initiated by the brain. Yet most of us fail to use some of the most amazing parts of the brain.
Sometimes we have a “sudden impulse” to do something…and we either do it or not. And if not, we may regret it for the rest of our life. That is an example of spontaneous intentionality.
To live a rewarding and fruitful life we must never stop learning, even when you are in the older times of life.
I base that thesis about truth on one simple fact:
There is ABSOLUTE TRUTH and it is based on the BIBLE!
The mind is addressed in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Phillipians 4:8, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” produces a marvelously condensed teaching in how to do life.
DISCLAIMER: I realize in our culture of political correctness and unabashed acceptance and approval of “diversity” my premise will offend some of you. I challenge you to stick around and engage in productive dialogue… even if it is virtual in nature.
And What About "Woke"
It seems to me being “woke” means different things to different people. To a person who IS woke, very likely it seems normal. On the other hand, to a person who continues living in the historical culture, it seems almost totally absurd, maybe even dangerous.
Terms like Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Critical Race Theory, Drag Queen Shows in elementary schools, and Gender Identity were originally thought to be absurd, illogical, even a joke. Very quickly, however, the serious change in culture was observed.
These people were extremely serious; gender identity created parental issues, equity resulted in lowering academic standards.
Absurdly, if you wanted to become a girl, a boy could go to school and use the girls bathroom. or conversely, if you expressed the logic that math wasn’t racist, you were mocked, maybe even canceled.
Historically, differences of belief and action could be discussed peacefully. Such is currently not the norm. However, if any person who supports the woke culture can debate logically and seriously, please join our blog where there are going to be one or more blogs discussing these actions.
Writing Can Give You a Rewarding Life
Writing can give you an effectively rewarding life. It can be the catharsis for a traumatic event in your life or the total enjoyment of writing be a children’s book.
You don’t even have to become a successful author, because just writing alone can be rewarding. But if you decide to go the self-publishing route, seeing your book published on Amazon is highly rewarding. Then, when that first book is sold, you deserve to feel quite successful.
All sorts of writing styles and topics are waiting your action. From highly political books to a relaxing novel an array of options exist, ready to be explored. My first writing was a magazine article for a now extinct magazine about a computer programming project called “Aircraft Rescue.
I admit to an emotional lift receiving a check and seeing my name in print! It made my day!
